Thank you for your support! We have gathered a total of 157 signatures in Clearwater Bay today. I will send the objection letter together with the signatures to the Lands Department, Hutchison and Sai Kung District Board. Hope they really listen and stop further damage to the environment and our flying field.

Today, as a result of our objection, Lands Department has agreed to further liaise with Hutchison about our request to stop laying overhead cables in the section from Point A to Point B on Tai Au Mum road in the map shown. I hope we will achieve a favourable solution finally. Let's see! :)

星期六上午有線電視的採訪隊會到清水灣拍攝我們的飛行場地。 希望大家當日盡量飛一些較為寧靜的飛機。

Ah Kin told me this morning that there are several cables running over head from one side to the opposite side of the roads around Tai Au Mun Road areas. In addition to that there is no warning sign board for the height restriction for heavy vehicles, eg double decck buses, lorries etc. Hence if you drive along the way to our flying site in windy days, there may be risk of falling cables if the cable do not run underground.

I called Mr. Wong of Lands Department this afternoon, and repress my views about the case.
I think the road right up to 布袋澳 is one of the most butiful locations of HongKong. There should not be any overhead cables at all.

I wonder why did they want to lay a cable on that location ! Is it for the service of people in the golf club ? Anyone have more information on this ?

Phone project on hold as residents decry poles as monstrosity

The government has halted a project by Hutchison Telecom to extend mobile phone coverage in Clear Water Bay and its country park after residents complained that the project's 200 telephone poles had become an eyesore in an area famous for its natural beauty.

The Lands Department granted permission for the network extension early this month, but asked the company to stop after receiving complaints from residents. Two-hundred of the 203 planned poles have already been erected.

Standing about 6 metres tall, the silver metal pylons line a long stretch of Clearwater Bay Road between Silver Strand and Tai Au Mun, from where they snake down Tai Au Mun Road to Po Toi O and Tai Wan Tau Road.

The department said it put up public notices in September - two weeks before granting the permit - on the Hang Hau rural committee notice board and at the Sai Kung District Office, to allow residents to object.

A spokeswoman did not say whether the department received any objections at the time. All the current complaints, of which she did not divulge the number, came after the project started.

"There is a visual impact issue that needs to be resolved before the project is allowed to proceed," she said. "We may have issued a permit; we can also take it back."

The department is consulting local residents and negotiating with Hutchison - which has offered to paint the poles green so they blend in with the greenery - to resolve the matter.

One Clear Water Bay resident, who did not want to be named, described the poles as "a monstrosity".

"These pylons have been erected with total disregard to the environmental and visual impact to one of the most beautiful and scenic areas of the countryside in Hong Kong," he said.

A Hutchison spokeswoman said it was actively working with the government to resolve the issue. But she expressed disappointment that the project - aimed at providing greater coverage in nearby country parks for the safety of hikers and tourists, and the convenience of customers - had met with opposition from some residents.

"We are conscious of the environment and ... it is the company's intention to paint the telephone poles green in the area after the erection work is finished," she said.

"We have halted the network enhancement works and are now engaging in active dialogue [with the parties involved]."
