To enable for a competitive racing, for the coming pylon race in June, I still prefer to limit the batteries at <=7.4V for Li and <=8.4V (7cell) for Ni. Motor spec must be 400 class or equiv. brushless motor.

Will there be a class for the 11V battery?
I know that it's not a legal rule for offical race. But usually the effiency of brushless motor is higher with higher voltage, ie, the performance of lower kv motor + high v is better than high kv motor + low v. I guess the race should be more exciting!

Of course, skills should be another major factor.

just my opinion!

Originally the rule we have discussed is to restrict the LiPo battery to 2-cells (7.4V) which is comparable to a 7-cell NiCD. That will give comparable edges for brushed and brushless motors using either of these battery types. However, if fellow pilots think that all participants will be using 3-cell LiPo with brushless motors anyway, I think the club is open to any suggestion for amending the rules. May be we can set up a vote here to determine the preference.

From what I saw and experienced in the test flight this morning, a proper setup of brushless motor with 2s2p lipo is already good enough to raise your adreline to a very very high level for a 5 to 10 min awesome flight.
I will opt for 2s lipo or 8.4 Nixx and brushless. 3s is too expensive and destructive.

Are we going to follow to F5D rules? I remember that it is a F3F style timing event. I think one round would not take longer than one minute (assume 10 legs).

Interesting topics here. I believe the race allowed with 3 cells is more interesting as the planes is able to reach it's top performance at this set up. The price of a 3 cells Lipo is far less than a 3m composite F3F plane. Speed 400 pylon using 2 cells Lipo (even with brushless motor) is very slow and boring.

Why not divide the race into 2 different classes such as:
1) 2 cells or 8.4V Nixx with brushed motor
2) Open class, no limitation on the motor and battery.

I believe most people want to see some REAL RACING with EP plane flying at over 120+ mph.

Brushless + 2s lipo on 400 pylon give me 120+ km per hour and 160+ for a master pilot.

Of course dividing the event into limited and unlimited classes will give more fun.

Pylon Race held at Taiwan. Align Glider SP reaches 180 - 220km per hour.

http://220.130.69.204/VCRSP/SP2.asf

Using the conversion rate: 1 kmph = mph x 1.609
It's top speed hits 136.7mph.

Right, 2s Lipo or 7cell Nicad can reach an average speed at 120km+ according to yesterday's tests by master pilots. Really fast and exciting! I had taken 3 videos (AVI files) in a total of 1.5MB. for George's plane(powered by 7-cell NiXX), a Mini Viper and a Sun Racer. Anybody can share some spaces at his web to host the files as I can't upload the files to this web.

Movies are here:

I think, since this is the first time HKRCSS is going to hold such an electric pylon event and we do not have experience on this, if we can stick with a 2-cell LiPo at this race, it may be a bit easier (safety and other factors) and we believe most local pilots still lack of experience in flying highspeed electric, so pushing the speed to its limit is a bit dangerous initially. Perhaps, we can keep the rule for 2-cell LiPo in this race, and relax it in the next race possibly scheduled few months later.

Big Yeung, you can send the movies to me at stan@rcsail.com then I can upload them for you.

Stanley, I suggest that it may need a new topic High Performance or Pylon Racing, to make sure it will not confuse will Electric Glider, like the RC Groups.com, everybody knows they are different types of plane! Patrick

I've prepared a diagram to illustrate my question. In most pylon races, the racers are flying in "left turn" circling around the poles. So wonder the flying pattern will be like (B) or (C) or stictly be (A). Appreciate if someone can clarify.

Will the pilot be standing in the mid-point between the poles ? Thanks !

p.s. Many thanks to Stanley & Ken on helping me to upload the image

This is the race course for standard F5D. Will we use this type of course?

YC/HENRY,

Hi, Wing and Henry,

Unfortunately, the rule for the competition is still not yet drafted. I can not really answer the question.

In fact, it is still open for discussion.

Personally, I think, if we adopt the rules used in F5D as Henry indicated, then we need to have sufficent judges and timing gear suitable for manning the contest. We have no experience on that!

If the track is similar to the F3F track then our existing equipment can be used to run the contest.
For safety reason, the F3F type of track has some merits as well, the judges, the CD and the whole crowd can be on one side of the track and far away from it, and we can also define a safety line to protect the workers.

What is your suggestion? All are welcome!

Image

Image

Image

Hey YC, the plane looks pretty nice!!! Quite tempting to get one for the Pylon race...

Where did you get it from? How much did it cost?

Hi Charles,
You may contact 阿堅 if you are interested in the racer.
