Hi Thomas,

A question: What is the purpose of limiting the maximum flying time (5 minutes) in task A? Why can't I fly the whole 7 minutes? If the maximum time is exceeded, is there any penalty?

You're in Johnson!

CM,
The MAX flying times (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mins) are MAX scored times, if you fly for more than that, it will still only count as the marked 'max' time. IE, 5:00 max, you fly 5:14, you mark down 5:14 on the scorecard, but you only calculate 5:00 during scoring.
If you fly 4:49 in a 5:00 max, you only count 4:49 (289seconds).
All scores are calculated in truncated seconds. For example, if you fly 120.42 seconds, the score is 120seconds. If you fly 120.96 seconds, it is also 120seconds.

Regarding task D, this task is different from the other tasks. The times (30s, 45s, 60..75..etc) are not MAX times, they are MIN times. You need to fly a flight for 30 seconds, before you can start and fly a flight for 45 seconds.
For example (first time is flying time, second number in brackets is the objective time)
Flight 1) 32s (30s)
Flight 2) 39s (45s)
Flight 3) 49s (45s)
Flight 4) 78s (60s)
Flight 5) 80s (75s)
Flight 6) 90s (90s)
Flight 7) 104s (105s)
Flight 8) 96s (105s)

as you can see, he needed to try the 45s flight twice, because he failed the first time. You can also see, he never satisfied the 105s hurdle, so his counted flights are 30s, 45s, 60s, 75s, and 90s, score is 300, which will be divided into the highest score of the round.

I've attached my scorecard from the Humen F3K Contest in October I hope it makes sense.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks!!

I understand all the other tasks but Task A. If there is no penalty for flying over 5 minutes, why bother put that "max 5 minutes" in the rules? I can fly the whole 7 minutes from my first throw if I like (I hope so !!), though I understand that I can only get the score of 5 minutes.

To better explain my scorecard above:

Round 1,
Task D, ladder, 15 second increasing time, must reach previous time before proceeding to next time, 10 minute window:

I was successful in reaching the 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 105 second hurdles, and failed to reach the 120s hurdle. This, my total seconds is 405. Incidentally, the highest total seconds in the group is also 405. Therefore, to get the Round score, I divided my total seconds with highest total seconds in group and multiplied it by 100 (405/405*100), to get the 1000 score.

Round 2,
Task G, best 5 flights, 2 minutes max, 10 minute window:
103, 67, 50, 70, 69, 39, 70, 78 seconds. I chose the best 5 flights, 103, 70, 69, 70, 78 seconds. Since none of them exceeded the 120s (2min) max, I am able to calculated all those seconds for a total of 390 seconds as my total seconds. I divided that with the highest total seconds in round (390s) and *100, to reach the round score of 1000. The total score is now 2000.

Round 3,
Task A, 5 minute max, 7 minute window, last flight counts.

This task is interesting in that only your last flight counts, so if the score is not bad, you should really consider the remaining working time, and your predicted ability to reach a better flight time, before you launch again!
I scored 225 seconds (max 5 minutes/300 seconds), and from the other's flying, I decided to not fly anymore to not risk the time, as others do not have anything higher than 225s. I divided my total seconds with highest total seconds in round and *100 to get the round score, 1000. Total score is now 3000.

Round 4,
Task H, 1-2-3-4 minutes max, in any order, 10 minutes max.

I recorded the times 128, 62, 242, 100 seconds. I then arranged my times the following 242(240s max), 128(180s max), 100(120s max), 62(60s max). As you see, on the 240s max and the 60s max, I exceeded the max times by 2 seconds each respectively. In which case, my adjusted seconds are as follows: 240(240s max), 128(180s max), 100(120s max), 60(60s max), for a total of 530 seconds. I divided that with the highest total seconds in round (530) *100 to reach another 1000, total score is now 4000.

Round 5,
Task C, All up last down, 3 minutes max

In this task, everyone launches at the same time, and times are recorded. 3 minutes max. We do this 3 times in the round. After you land, you cannot throw again. I recorded 0, 76, and 60 seconds. I received a 0 on my first flight because I landed out of bounds. My total seconds is therefore 136 seconds. I divided that with the highest total seconds in group (167seconds) *100 to get 814, for a total of 4814.

As per F3K rules, I am able to drop 1 score after 5 flown rounds, so I dropped my 814, and is left with a perfect 4000 as my final score.

-----------------------

This Sunday, I suggest we eliminate the landing/launching area restrictions, as the field is quite small as it is. If you land outside the field, you are in water and the 0 will not make a difference. Therefore, to simplify it for the many new F3K pilots I suggest we eliminate that rule.

However, I will suggest we enforce the penalty rule, if your plane hits anyone or tents/etc during FLYING, you will receive a -100 point deduction. Timers please be aware of this and mark it accordingly. Please fly safely, and please look carefully before launching.

Hi CM,

Because it will affect the strategy of the task. If you are able to throw right away and reach 5 minutes on your first flight, that is good, don't launch again, because as I mentioned, only last flight counts!
If your first flight is 40s, second is 120s, maybe you can decide if you want to throw again, risk the 120s but have the possibility of a 260s flight.
The skill of launching directly and trying to fly as long as possible is tested in task C, all up last down, where everyone throws at the same time.
The skills tested in this task is not only to read the air, but also be able to assess the results you may get in particular weather conditions, the ability to see what scores others are getting in order to assess the worthiness of the risk of taking another flight after a decent flight, and the ability of thinking fast and making risk decisions quickly during high-pressured situations.

Dear Thomas,

Your logo design looks beautiful. However, please mind you that the HKSAR government logo and dragon boat logo may be copyright protected by HK Government or its associated organizations such as HK Toruist Board.
I still remember that when we joined the Viking Race F3F few years ago, we wanted to print our own designed logo with the HK dragon sign on our wings, we needed to get their approval for use, and promised to remove it after we returned from our trip. I guess you better check with them first

By the way, I will join the contest this Sunday

Hi Stanley,

Thanks for the heads up, I am aware that the original junk boat and the Brand HK logos are copyrighted and need approval. However, these are original artworks I drew. The junk boat is different enough (quite different actually) from the HK tourism board's logo and will not cause any problems, the only part that may be affected is the ribbons, as they may resemble the ribbons as protected by Brand HK.

I wonder if the Brand HK copyrights reach towards artwork with similar themes? I will double check with the appropriate departments. It's hard to think of icons/symbols to represent HK since so many things are copyrighted now....

I have not yet approached the government regarding the usage of the HKSAR logo, will do that shortly as well.

Worst case scenario, if everyone likes the junk design more, I will change the ribbon design but keep the junk. The skyline is cool, but too complex for a shirt, the whites will be much too small to see clearly. I hope we gain approval to use the HKSAR logo or HK flag though, I think that is the key element in a team logo/jersey for representing a country/SAR.

See you Sunday!

Thomas

By the way,

I would like to do some filming at the contest, unfortunately the only camera I have at the moment capable of HD output is my phone. Oh well, better than nothing!!
If anyone else has a gopro or video gear please bring it along, I can use all the footage we can get :)

For Task H - 1,2,3,4 min to fly.
If I attempted 4 flights in this task within 10 min. I could only get, say 61 sec, 62 sec, 63 sec and 64 sec . Then I'll get score only in the 1 min interval (i.e. count with 61 sec) but no score for 2,3,4 min interval?
OR I still have score for the 1 min interval (count with 61 sec) and the 2 min interval (count with 62 sec) and 3 min (count with 63 sec.) and 4 min (count with 64 sec)?

Post subject:  Re: 手擲滑翔機(F3K)比賽 - 2012年11月18日

Since the 1, 2, 3, and 4 minutes are MAX restrictions, it will be counted as your 2nd scenario.

The 61 second flight will be knocked to 60 seconds, and counted towards the 1-min MAX flight. The 62/63/64 second flights can be counted by their full times in ANY of the 2/3/4 min maxes respectively, because none of them reach other MAXes.

Your total seconds in that round would be 249 seconds.

-------------

With 5 rounds, and the lunch break, I expect we can finish by 2:30, assuming 2 groups, 10 minute rounds, with 5 minutes between groups/rounds. If need be, we can take a bit more time between groups to make sure everything is calculated correctly.

That should still give us lot's of time to social and fly after the actual contest before we have to depart on hte 6:15 ferry.

Thomas
