Hey guys,

Just thought to post some photos of my holidays back home in Vancouver. I've been able to practice in my backyard for ~1-1.5hours every day, and went to a contest in Seattle. There will be another contest next week in Mission, but I won't be able to go to the IHLGF the weekend after that in California, not enough money :( haha

Got the chance to practice at our RC glider field as well, 20 minutes away from my house.

Has there been any gatherings the past few weeks in HK? Can't wait to come back and fly with you guys again.

Really like the big green field for flying, jealous! :x
We don't have any flying field comparable to this in HK. Even a small field like the one in Sham Chung is inconvenient to access and very unfortunately also closed for us to fly. :( :(

Small field is okay too, as long as we have fun!

I flew in the Oakalla Hawks (my home club) April contest today in Mission, BC.
1st round was tough, very very windy with small thermals, didn't do well in that round and used my drop for round 1.
Winds started to settle around rounds 2 and 3 and by round 4-7 the air is very dead and inactive. The conditions were very hard to fly in because the thermals were so small and light that all your turns had to be perfect to simply stay around the same height or to slow down the descent.
I felt I was flying at a disadvantage using my heavier Shift (290g) compared to the Neos I crashed last weekend which is 260~270grams. But, I still managed to stay in the contest and ended with 2nd place.

It would be good to organize a DLG contest this summer.
I think the best possible DLG site we can have now is 創興水上活動中心 in Sai Kung.

Is there any pilot interested in organizing/participating in a DLG contest sometimes in June? It would be hot summer day though. If we can get more pilots interested in, we can set a day and start organizing it.

Stanley,

I am interested, please count me in.
Is it accessible by car?

Lets set a date, perhaps June 17th? Once we have a date it will be easier to ask people to join I think.

Why not set a date, say 24 June (Sunday), see whether we can gather at least 10 pilots for formal or informal contest in 創興水上活動中心 in Sai Kung.

Any pilot interested to join or suggestion of another date?

The last sunday of the month is our monthly DLG gathering in China with the Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen pilots.

....but if 27th is better for everyone I can do that as well. I will just have to try to persuade some of them to come down :)

I think it would be good to schedule it as a formal contest to try to interest more people. Hong Kong Cup to include mainland pilots?

Post subject:  Re: DLG flying

We can schedule one week earlier on 17 June. The main problem is that not many HK pilots are interested in DLG now. We have a discussion last Sunday but it seems that we can not get sufficient number of pilots to run a contest. Perhaps, we can just gather on 17 June and go to 創興水上活動中心 for practice flying and to explore the possibility of flying DLG and/or F3B there as a long-term activity. If your gathering with Mainland pilots on 24 June is in Shenzhen, there may be some HK pilots willing to go as well.

Sure, 17th would be great to facilitate both events.
How many people have expressed interest so far in HK?
At the moment, 2 mainland pilots have expressed interest. We have a small gathering in Dongguan this sunday with 10+ pilots, so I will ask if anyone else is interested.

No problem, although I am not sure if they will be as interested to come if it was not a contest and just a funfly, because some of them will have to go through an application process.
I also agree with you though, it can be a practice 'event' to test the field, for future contests.

I can arrange for the June 24th gathering to be in Shenzhen.

Stanley, do you have a list of people interested in flying on the 17th?
If we have more than 10 people, having a contest to fly a few different tasks would be great.

Why don't I start the list, please add to it, thanks!

1. Thomas Lee
2. Alex Tang (maybe)
3. Stanley
4. Johnson?
5. Kin?

What time will you guys arrive?

Post subject:  Re: DLG flying

Hi Thomas,

To go there we need to park the car in 北潭涌. However, it is usually full in weekend after 9am. That means we need to arrive before 9am to get a parking space. Then we can take a green taxi to go there, it costs about $45.

Unfortunately, the number of pilots interested is very small.
I am not sure this is meaningful at all to go there for practice DLG if only a few of us go.
Anyway, the weather is really hot these days, would it be better to try another cooler day later this year?

Post subject:  Re: DLG flying

Hi Stanley,

Thanks for the info on the parking and fare.
How many people are interested so far? My concern is that it is father's day, and pilots may need to spend the time with their families instead.
I practice in any weather regardless of how many people, so the decision should be made by you guys.

Father day! oh my God! I forgot this.
My daughters haven't mentioned anything about this yet, poor dad...

This is really not a good time of a year to fly DLG, unless we fly very early, say 7am, to avoid the hot sun.
Any view from interested pilots?

Post subject:  Re: DLG flying

I'll keep watching this thread for the next few days to see the general consensus.
The sun is no problem, just stay hydrated :)

Anyway, if this doesn't work out, perhaps we can plan a contest for later in the year with enough lead time to try and interest some more mainland pilots to attend. If we can pull some of them down here, attendance should be much higher. Their biggest problem is needing time to apply for the travel documents.
