Post subject:  DLG gatherings or contests this year?

Hey guys,

I am a F3K enthusiast and vendor in Canada, and will be moving back to Hong Kong in June/July this summer.

Are there any gatherings or contests scheduled for this year yet? It would be great to fly against you guys.

I am looking for a small field near my house in Yuen Long to practice in, found some candidates on Google maps already, can't wait to check them out when I get back!

Cheers,
Thomas

By the way, remember to join our club when you are back. This will cover your insurance.

Thanks Johnson, probably DLGs first, but I think I will start learning some slope soaring before I leave Canada, maybe go on a slope soaring camping trip with some friends, they have been asking me for a long time to join them!

Regarding the insurance, is it valid when I fly contests overseas?

Ah Pong, that looks great, do you fly that often? After I settle in, maybe end of this year or sometime next year, I will buy a new CNC milling machine to mould some new DLGs with. Have you done any moulding in HK?

I'm interested to hear, what types of DLGs are you guys flying?

I am competing with the pre-production version of the JJ Edge, and the Flow 5. I'm going to sell most of my planes before I come back, and will be flying the production version of the JJ Edge and continue flying with the Flow 5 as well.

I get to fly a lot of pre-production models because I am a vendor, I hope I designers continue to send me samples when I come back! hahaha

Hi Thomas,

I used to fly very often years before, but seldom fly recently.

I have tried moulding a F3F ship's V-tail:

That's really nice, is it your design? Only tails for now?

Cool to see that there are others moulding, I am very new to composites fabrication... normally when I 'build' it is just putting servos into the wings, hahah!

Thomas, Just to remind you there are some handy material for DLG which are not easily availble in Hong Kong:

Thin Kelvar cloth,
98 carbon cloth
Thin , medium thick foam safe CA glue
0.2~0.8 mm steel wire,
Bondable telfon pushrod housing...
hinge tape (may be some thin peel ply)

Keep these on hand.

Thanks Yeung for the heads up! I may have to bring some piano wire/etc with me back from Vancouver then.

I was originally thinking of buying a lot of those things online:
Composite fabrication materials from R&G Composites in Germany
Bring back my Dremel tool from Vancouver
Buy other small tools from Hobby King
Etched teflon from Tailboom.com

I am wondering, is there duty in HK for packages above a certain $ value (non-commercial)?

Dear Thomas,
Don't worry about the import duty.

R-G has minimum order requirement.
Dremel tools are easily available here, DC or AC but remember 220V ac!
D47 and D60 servos are not available here too!

Thanks Johnson,

No problem with min order, I won't be ordering from them until I buy my CNC machine anyway :)

No problem on D47/D60 servos either, I can get them directly from manufacturer. But lately, I am moving away from those servos, they are OK for normal use, but not good for competition. A lot of thermal drift in different temperatures and poor centering. Are the DLG enthusiasts in HK mainly using these servos?

I am now using Tahmazo TS-D6011 (same as Hyperion DS09-scd) in wings and Tahmazo DS62 (same as one of the very popular JRs) on tails. Again, I can get these direct from manufacturer so no problem :)

We used GWS once and some used Futaba (Both were not good to fit flush to the airfoil.
I use D47 and it is probably out dated now. Thermal drift is very annoying.

Tiny JR servo is not common here.

Furthermore the 150mah ~250mah Nimh cells are difficult to get. Not a problem if you are using up to date Lipo cells.

I never noticed the thermal drift until I went to a hotter climate to compete, I suspect it must be very obvious in HK...

Many pilots are using Lipos with regulators for DLGs, but I still prefer NiMh. Need the noseweight anyway, 1 less part to fail (regulator), safe, and very reliable. I'm using 300mAh packs, from manufacturer as well. I will bring a dozen packs back then, so I do not need to order any for a while...

A couple pictures from a small gathering a few days ago. Flew at a sod farm about 1.5 hours away from our usual field.

You would miss this field when you are in HK, coz we don't have such wonderful land for RC / DLG.

I will sure miss it, but I am easy to please... I will be very happy if I can find a small field to just practice launching, low-level thermal skills, and quick turnarounds :D

Luckily I will still be going to the IHLGF and some other contests in Canada and the US next year, so will be able to fly on nice fields again 8)

Now, I just need to save up some money to buy a F3F plane :(

If you can find such a small field for practice, please let us know. We have been looking for a place like that for a long time :!:

Post subject:  Shek Kong Airfield

I know RC pilots in HK used to have access to Shek Kong airfield a long time ago before they were kicked out in the early 70's.

Since then, has anyone (especially sailplane pilots) tried asking permission to fly there?

I also read that you guys used to fly at Kai Tak airport in the mornings as well, is that in the past now, or is that still allowed? Please excuse me, I am not very familiar with the situation in HK...

I have been slowly working on one of my gliders for the past week, hopefully I will finish it in another ~1.5 weeks...

Anyone else out there thinking about flying some DLG this summer? I am thinking about going up to ShenZhen to meet up with the pilots there to fly in mid-late August.
