I think balsa/wood is environmental friendly, as they are biodegradable. Plastic materials are not, and they make pollution since they were being produced. We only use just a very very small amount of wood for modelling material. Compare to those who cut down a whole tropical forest for fuel and building material, I think wood models are less harmful to the environment.

One said that if you are going to cut a 100 years old tree to make a piece of furniture, then you must use that furniture for another 100 years. I totally agree with this. Environment protection is to treasure everything our mother Earth gives us.

(ahhh. . . I feel guilty when I think of my composite sailplanes . . . )

p.s. Anyone can tell me how to use "CD/VCD/DVD" to make model airplanes  :?:

Hello Ken,

How about the glue? We are used to epoxy and CA but do you think if they are acceptable? I just can't imagine using "rice+water" to build my model.

We are getting more and more environmental-unfriendly planes with all these stuff: plastic, foam, epoxy glue, glass fiber, kevlar, dynama, etc...

I still remember I lost my Shooting Star years ago in Fei Ngo Shan. After a year lost in misery, it was discovered by a fellow pilot and emerged out from the bush again. The fuse body is intact (made of glass fiber -that's environmentally bad!) and should be able to reuse again. The wing is basically intact but the wing's inner part with the balsa sheet sandwich was badly degraded (environmentally good!). The conclusion is glass moldies are environmental-unfriendly - may be the carbon (degradable?) fiber planes are better, mmmg...

Anyway, we should go back to the good old days with our planes built from wood parts and glue them together using rice-water. By then, we might be able to get back our clean air and blue sky. Don't you realize we got choked by the polluted air all day up on the mountain?

Use only for our need, not our greed.
