Post subject:  Pan Asian F3F Tour

Dear fellow F3F pilots,

We had a friendly discussion with the Korean, Taiwanese and Australian pilots about forming a Pan Asian F3F tour last time we met during HK Open. The idea is to hold an international F3F race each year in country around this region - Asia Pacific. It was decided that the first contest will be hosted by Taiwan and it will be in Penghu Island around late October or early November next year. Then, most likely it will be Korea in 2009, Australia in 2010 and Hong Kong in 2011. Of course if there are other countries interested in hosting the contest, it will be decided later by a selection committee formed with representatives from each county.

Currently, we need to define the name of the Pan Asian F3F tour, design a contest logo and draft a charter with goal, guidelines and characteristics of the said tour. We will also set up a web site for it later. We now in the process of consultation for the name of this F3F tour. So far, suggested names include:

Typhoon F3F,
Typhoon F3F Race,
Typhoon F3F Club,
Typhoon Club

Any other suggestion? I think easy to remember and to reflect the nature of Pan Asian F3F will be the criteria. Please give your suggestions and comments.

Stanley

For the meaning, "Typhoon" is not bad, but I always think it is not "sound good" . . . Compare to, say, "Viking". "Viking" sounds loud and clear, active and cheerful. While "Typhoon" is a little bit "dull and flat" . .

I like the term "Pacific" too. It may cover US in future.

Initially, my favour is Typhoon F3F but it is difficult to pronounce which requires twisting our tongue.

Unlike Viking Race, the use of Race to match with Typhoon is a bit peculiar to me.

Viking is the name of middle age people living in North Europe, so the use of Race (such as human race) is appropriate.
Of course, the meaning of race here in Viking Race for F3F is a run for contest and Viking is just a symbolic name, so both cases are perfectly match and it sounds good also with strong vowels.

But for the name Typhoon Race, typhoon is a weather phenomenon and can not be described as (human) race, if Typhoon is a symbolic name and race is as a run for contest, it may be ok, but it is not perfect.

I don't like the name Typhoon Club as it sounds like World Cup without the characteristics of racing (with time) in our F3F sport.

How about other names such as:

Apac Race
Cathay Race

(Cathay is the name derived from Khitan 契丹, an ancient people living in northeastern China who found the kingdom of Lao 遼)
?

I also think about using the name of a bird which migrates from Korea to Taiwan, then Hong Kong back and fore in the winter and summer. Its name is Back Face Platalea

Platalea Race ? but it seems difficult to pronounce and remember!

Search continue….…

Cathay Race

AP = Asia/Australia/Pacific

Please don't discuss out of topic matter here!

I personally like the name of Typhoon, but it just a bit peculiar to me if it is associated with the word Race.
Typhoon is something related to wind and is definitely appropriate for our F3F sport. Although in different regions of the world, other names such as Cyclone, Storm, and Hurricane are used, it is quite appropriate because the name Typhoon is specifically used in East Asia.

So,
Typhoon Race - a bit peculiar because the word Race has other meaning too
Typhoon F3F - difficult to pronounce
Typhoon Club - doesn’t sound good

How about these?
Typhoon Run
Typhoon Soar
Typhoon Quest

The name for Asian International F3F Race is too long to pronounce and remember. It is better to have a short form, easy to pronounce and remember.

Are there other words associated with wind, glider, soaring and with Asian-Pacific regional meanings?

Asian Soar
East Wind Race
Asian Wind
Wind God Race

For joking only! How about the name Kamikaze Race (神風賽)?
Japanese may like it but not for people from other Asian countries. Glider pilots certainly don’t like it as it is associated with Kamikaze Squad that hits their targets by commit suicide dive.

Seriously, I will not join if it is called "神風賽" or any other related to what the jap had done in the war.

Stanley,
In a Typhoon, wind speed will get over 26m/s, which is outside the speed limit of F3F race, and that mean NO flying.
That's exactly what happened in the last round of Welsh Open 2007 :(

Agree to going with simply, easy-to-understand and neutral names like what Mak suggested :o

Perhaps like:

Asia F3F Open :

Pacific F3F Open :

In that case, it should be named as:
Pacific Open 2008 - Taiwan
Pacific Open 2009 - Korea
Pacific Open 2010 - Australia
Pacific Open 2011 - Hong Kong.

Or we just say:
F3F Pacific Open 2008
F3F Pacific Open 2009
....
Simple and Clear.
